Kids Hats – In over your head

January 29th, 2010

If you have kids or have gone shopping for a kids hat then you’ve may have ended up with a more difficult task than what you first realized. Buying a kids hat can be a pain simply because it’s tough to find places that sell hats that will fit a childs head without falling over their eyes or falling off when they’re playing. You can go to several stores before you even see a possible fitting kids hat and even then you can’t be sure unless you have the child there with you right now. Of course you can always purchase a kids hat that has an adjusttable backing to it with several notches, but you may have noticed that when you use the smallest size notches it begins to bend the cloth in the hat, deforming it and making it look kind of silly. In the end if you want a kids hat that actually fits correctly you may end up purchasing a custom made hat online or in a store in which case you’ll be paying extra money for it. Who thought that buying things for children could be so difficult?

All the hats that you see when you go into retail stores at the mall or elsewhere are typically made for people who have an adult sized head. Even the fitted caps typically have an elastic band that allows for stretching so people with different sized heads can fit into it, but these still won’t fit on a child- they’re simply too big. Much of this has to do with the cardboard or plastic bill at the front. The size of this can make all the difference in whether or not a kids hat actually fits or not and you can use this as a guide to see if the hat will be comfortable and look correctly on the child. A good rule to follow is to be sure that the bill, when layed flat and on the childs head, doesn’t extend more than two inches beyond the kids eyes. Another good way to measure this is to have the child put on the hat, then take two fingers and hold point them upward to the sky so that your thumb is facing toward you. Now slide your fingers inbetween the hat and the childs head, if both fingers can fit easily then it’s probably too loose. If not even one finger can fit then it’s too small, and if both fingers can fit but it’s very tight then stop it because you’re hurting him!

Here we’ll discuss the different reasons for purchasing a kids hat made specifically for kids and why it has its advantages over simply purchasing a larger sized hat made for adults and then just downsizing it. Thanks for coming!
